Why do my lights flicker sometimes?

Often something simple — a bulb that's loose or nearing the end of its life. But flickering that happens in multiple rooms, or that gets worse when a large appliance turns on, can point to a loose connection somewhere in the wiring or electrical panel, which is a different level of concern entirely.
Is this a DIY job or worth calling someone?
If it's one lamp and tightening or replacing the bulb fixes it, that's genuinely nothing to worry about. Flickering across multiple rooms is worth having looked at promptly. If you also notice any burning smell, treat that as more urgent: stop using that circuit, turn off power to the area at the breaker if you can safely reach it, and call an electrician the same day — or call 911 first if you see smoke or sparking.
