I noticed a burning smell near an outlet, switch, or my breaker panel — what should I do?
What’s likely going on
A persistent burning smell near electrical equipment is one of the few things on this site we won't soften: it's a real sign of overheating wiring, which is exactly how electrical fires start. This is true whether or not lights are also flickering or out — the smell is the signal that matters most.
What we’d suggest
If you smell burning and it isn't fading, turn off power to that area at the breaker if you can safely reach it, don't use the outlet or switch again, and call an electrician the same day — this isn't one to schedule for later in the week. If you see smoke, sparking, or the smell is strong and you're unsure, leave the area and call 911 first. Once it's safe, we're glad to help get it properly repaired.
