Why does my toilet keep running after I flush?
What’s likely going on
Almost always one of two parts inside the tank: the flapper (the rubber seal at the bottom) isn't sealing all the way, letting water slowly leak into the bowl, or the fill valve isn't shutting off once the tank refills. Either way, water is running constantly even though nothing looks wrong from the outside — and it adds up fast on a water bill.
Is this a DIY job or worth calling someone?
If you're comfortable taking the tank lid off, a flapper is a genuinely simple, inexpensive swap. A fill valve that won't shut off, or a toilet that's still running after a new flapper, usually means something less obvious — worth having someone take a real look rather than guessing further.
