Why does my bathroom sink or tub drain so slowly?

Hair and soap scum are the usual culprits in a bathroom drain specifically — they bind together into a dense clog that sits right at or just below the stopper, which is different from the grease-based clogs common in a kitchen.
Is this a DIY job or worth calling someone?
A lot of bathroom clogs sit close enough to the surface that removing the stopper and clearing what's caught there yourself is realistic. If it's still slow after that, the clog is further down than you can reach safely, and that's a better job for someone with the right tool.
