Why does my door squeak every time it opens?

Simple friction — the hinge pin has lost its lubrication over years of use, and metal is grinding against metal every time the door moves.

This is about as safe and simple a fix as exists in a home — a few drops of oil on the hinge pin usually solves it immediately. Worth trying yourself before considering anything else.
